How to decrypt encrypted Tesla Dashcam & Sentry clips (2026.20+)

Since vehicle software 2026.20, every new clip your Tesla writes to the USB drive is encrypted by default — it won't play on a laptop the way Tesla MP4s always did. Here are the ways to get your footage back into playable video, and how to decrypt an entire drive’s worth of clips in one pass — every camera angle of every event, taken straight off the drive.

Why do Tesla clips need decrypting now?

Tesla vehicle software 2026.20, rolling out from May 2026, enables USB clip encryption by default. Each new Sentry Mode and Dashcam clip is written as a per-file encrypted container — an eCryptfs/AES-based format — rather than a plain MP4, with each clip's key sealed to your vehicle and retrievable only through Tesla's authenticated systems. The folder layout (TeslaCam, SentryClips, SavedClips, RecentClips) looks unchanged — but the files themselves no longer open in a video player. What are your options for decrypting Tesla clips?

There are three routes, and they suit different situations:

  • In the car. Your Tesla's own Dashcam Viewer plays your recordings on the car's screen — fine for reviewing an event from the driver's seat, but it doesn't give you playable files on your computer. (See the Tesla owner's manual for the in-car viewer and the Controls > Safety > Encrypt Dashcam Recordings toggle.)
  • Tesla's web viewer. Tesla provides a browser-based viewer at dashcam.tesla.com: you sign in with your Tesla account, drag in (or browse for) the .mp4 files you want, and they are decrypted locally in the browser — in Tesla's words, “the files never leave your device”. It's the official way to view encrypted clips on a computer. It works on the files you hand it rather than on the drive itself, so it covers the clips you can already see and select in the TeslaCam folders.
  • ClipSalvage Decrypt. How do I batch decrypt an entire drive in one pass?

Deleted or formatted drive? That's recovery, not just decryption

Decryption only helps with clips that are still on the drive. When Tesla’s own viewer is the right tool

If your clips are still on the drive and open normally, use dashcam.tesla.com. It decrypts them in your browser, it is free, and for ordinary intact recordings it is the simpler choice — there is no reason to buy anything.

ClipSalvage is for the cases a viewer cannot reach. A viewer works on files the drive still lists; it has to be handed the clip. Once a clip has been deleted, or the drive formatted, the video is still physically present but there is no file to hand it — and that is the point at which carving, and then decryption, become the only route. On encrypted clips: decryption applies to clips recorded after Tesla enables software 2026.20 USB encryption in your region. Tesla rolls this out by market, and it is not enabled everywhere — notably not in mainland China. Where it has not been enabled, your clips are ordinary MP4 files and ClipSalvage recovers them as normal; the decryption features simply do not apply. Check what your car is running if you are unsure.
