The four options at a glance
Recovering deleted Tesla footage comes down to four routes. The table below is the same one published in our recovery guide; every ClipSalvage column entry is a capability described elsewhere on this site, and the price bands for the other three come from their publicly advertised pricing.

When a Tesla-specific tool is the right choice
Tesla writes clips into TeslaCam/SentryClips, SavedClips and RecentClips, one file per camera per minute, with camera position encoded in the filename. When those directory entries are gone, a generic tool returns a pile of undifferentiated MP4s. ClipSalvage scans raw disk sectors for MP4 signatures at exFAT cluster boundaries — roughly 131,000× fewer comparisons than a byte-by-byte scan, derived from the 128 KB cluster size — then reconstructs Tesla's own structure around what it finds: camera position (read from the filename where it survives, otherwise predicted by an on-device vision model), Sentry event grouping, and a 0–100 confidence score per clip built from seven structural factors.
It is also the only option in this comparison that handles Tesla's encrypted clips (software 2026.20+). Since v2.20.0 it finds the encrypted containers, previews them free by decrypting in memory, and — after a one-time Tesla sign-in fetches your keys — decrypts and exports them in batch, fully offline from then on.
When you should use something else
- Physical damage → a professional lab. If the drive clicks, is not detected at all, or was exposed to liquid or impact, no software can read it. A lab is the only route, at $300–$1,500+ and with your footage leaving your possession.
- Comfortable on the command line, unencrypted clips only → PhotoRec. It is free and carves MP4s. You lose filenames, camera identification, event grouping, previews and confidence scoring — and it cannot decrypt 2026.20+ clips — but for a pre-2026.20 drive and a patient user it costs nothing.
- Recovering mixed data, not just Tesla clips → a general-purpose tool. If the same drive also held documents or photos you need back, a general recovery app ($50–$100+) covers the whole drive. It will return Tesla videos too, just without any Tesla-aware structure.
Whatever you choose, do this first
Stop writing to the drive. Take it out of the car and do not let Sentry Mode record over it — every minute it stays in the Tesla, deleted clips may be overwritten. Then work from a disk image rather than the drive itself where the tool supports it, so the original is preserved regardless of which route you end up taking.

Search for Tesla dashcam recovery and the same handful of products comes back. Here is what each one says about Tesla footage on its own pages, checked on 6 August 2026.* This is a summary of their published material, not a test: we have not benchmarked these products, and nothing below is a claim about how well any of them performs.
Disk Drill (CleverFiles)
Publishes a dashcam-recovery walkthrough that explicitly covers Tesla USB drives, and lists the situations it addresses as accidental deletion, missing clips, overwriting, formatting and storage corruption. It advertises exFAT support and MP4 recognition, and describes an “Advanced Camera Recovery” mode that mentions fragmented Tesla video clips. Cross-platform, with a paid tier.
Stellar
Publishes a Tesla-specific guide that describes how Dashcam and Sentry Mode write to the USB drive in the centre console, and how that footage is lost to deletion or formatting. It claims recovery of deleted videos “of any format, including MP4”.
Cisdem
Publishes a Tesla guide covering both normal and Sentry Mode recordings. Usefully, it also documents a route that has nothing to do with recovery software: submitting a Data Privacy Request to Tesla for a copy of the data associated with your account. Worth knowing about — though note Tesla’s own documentation indicates Dashcam and Sentry recordings are generally not included in that copy, which Disk Drill’s page also points out.
EaseUS
Publishes a Tesla dashcam recovery guide aimed at macOS, describing the USB-drive workflow and general video recovery.
Recuva and R-Studio
Both are long-established general-purpose recovery tools, and both come up in Tesla discussions — but neither publishes a Tesla-specific page at all. Their material describes file and partition recovery generally. If you are recovering mixed data from a drive that happens to have held Tesla clips, that generality is the point; if you specifically want camera identification or Sentry event grouping, there is nothing on their pages that speaks to it.
What none of them mention
As of 6 August 2026, none of these six vendors’ pages mention Tesla clip encryption, decryption, or a Tesla sign-in step. That matters because of how Tesla’s software 2026.20 encryption works rather than because of anything about these products: each clip is written as a per-file encrypted container, and the keys are held by Tesla and released only against an authenticated Tesla sign-in. A tool that never signs in to Tesla has no route to those keys. That is a consequence of Tesla’s design, not a judgement about any vendor’s engineering — and it would change the day a vendor added Tesla authentication, which would be a headline feature they would announce.
If your clips were recorded before 2026.20, they are ordinary MP4 files and this does not apply to you.
What a real drive returns
Numbers from actual scans, so you can calibrate expectations: one reused Tesla drive returned 3,567 recoverable clips, of which only about 60 still had their original Tesla filenames — the rest were re-identified by camera position, roughly 65% of them by the on-device vision model, giving around 90% camera coverage across the drive. A second drive image returned 3,892 clips, 2,954 of them encrypted. Recovery is rarely a question of finding one clip; it is a question of sorting thousands.

On encrypted clips: decryption applies to clips recorded after Tesla enables software 2026.20 USB encryption in your region. Tesla rolls this out by market, and it is not enabled everywhere — notably not in mainland China. Where it has not been enabled, your clips are ordinary MP4 files and ClipSalvage recovers them as normal; the decryption features simply do not apply. Check what your car is running if you are unsure. ClipSalvage decrypts only clips recorded by a vehicle on your own Tesla account: the keys are held by Tesla and released solely to an authenticated sign-in, so footage from someone else’s car cannot be decrypted by this or any other tool. Recovery of deleted or formatted clips also depends on the sectors not having been overwritten — a drive that kept recording may have nothing left to recover, which is why the free scan shows you what survives before you pay.
