When a Tesla-specific tool is the right choice

Tesla writes clips into TeslaCam/SentryClips, SavedClips and RecentClips, one file per camera per minute, with camera position encoded in the filename. When those directory entries are gone, a generic tool returns a pile of undifferentiated MP4s. ClipSalvage scans raw disk sectors for MP4 signatures at exFAT cluster boundaries — roughly 131,000× fewer comparisons than a byte-by-byte scan, derived from the 128 KB cluster size — then reconstructs Tesla's own structure around what it finds: camera position (read from the filename where it survives, otherwise predicted by an on-device vision model), Sentry event grouping, and a 0–100 confidence score per clip built from seven structural factors.

It is also the only option in this comparison that handles Tesla's encrypted clips (software 2026.20+). Since v2.20.0 it finds the encrypted containers, previews them free by decrypting in memory, and — after a one-time Tesla sign-in fetches your keys — decrypts and exports them in batch, fully offline from then on.

When you should use something else

  • Physical damage → a professional lab. If the drive clicks, is not detected at all, or was exposed to liquid or impact, no software can read it. A lab is the only route, at $300–$1,500+ and with your footage leaving your possession.
  • Comfortable on the command line, unencrypted clips only → PhotoRec. It is free and genuinely good at carving MP4s. You lose filenames, camera identification, event grouping, previews and confidence scoring — and it cannot decrypt 2026.20+ clips — but for a pre-2026.20 drive and a patient user it costs nothing.
  • Recovering mixed data, not just Tesla clips → a general-purpose tool. If the same drive also held documents or photos you need back, a general recovery app ($50–$100+) covers the whole drive. It will return Tesla videos too, just without any Tesla-aware structure.

Whatever you choose, do this first

Stop writing to the drive. Take it out of the car and do not let Sentry Mode record over it — every minute it stays in the Tesla, deleted clips may be overwritten. Then work from a disk image rather than the drive itself where the tool supports it, so the original is preserved regardless of which route you end up taking.

What a real drive returns

Numbers from actual scans, so you can calibrate expectations: one reused Tesla drive returned 3,567 recoverable clips, of which only about 60 still had their original Tesla filenames — the rest were re-identified by camera position, roughly 65% of them by the on-device vision model, giving around 90% camera coverage across the drive. A second drive image returned 3,892 clips, 2,954 of them encrypted. Recovery is rarely a question of finding one clip; it is a question of sorting thousands.
