Best software to recover Tesla Dashcam & Sentry footage from a formatted USB

The best software depends on whether your clips are encrypted. For ordinary MP4 clips, free PhotoRec or a general-purpose app such as Disk Drill, EaseUS or Recuva can try to recover them. ClipSalvage is built only for Tesla drives and also recovers and decrypts the encrypted clips Tesla has written by default on supported cars since software 2026.20. No tool can bring back footage that has already been overwritten, so take the drive out of the car before you try anything.

Formatted USB Software Comparison

Before you install anything

Take the USB drive out of the car. Tesla records in a loop, so every minute the drive stays in the car can overwrite what the format left behind. Don't save files to it, don't let the car reformat it, and install recovery software on your computer, not on the Tesla drive. More on what a format does: what happens to Tesla dashcam data when you format the USB drive.

Each competitor entry below comes from that vendor's own website. Where a vendor's pages don't say something, the cell says “Not stated” rather than guessing. We make ClipSalvage, so it is listed first and its row describes our own product. We have not benchmarked these products; nothing here is a performance test.*

How to choose

  • Clips saved unencrypted, no budget → PhotoRec. Free and cross-platform. You get MP4 files back without original names, camera positions or folders, and you sort them yourself.
  • Mixed data on the same drive → a general-purpose app. Disk Drill, EaseUS, Recoverit, Cisdem, R-Studio and Recuva recover many file types, not just video. Check each free tier's limit before you rely on it.
  • Tesla clips you need sorted, or clips recorded encrypted → ClipSalvage. It scans raw sectors for Tesla clips, reads original filenames where they survive, identifies camera positions, groups Sentry events where it can match them, and is the only tool in this list that states it recovers and decrypts Tesla's encrypted clips. Scan your drive free.
  • Drive clicks, isn't detected, or was physically damaged → a professional lab. No software on this list can read a drive the computer can't see.

Why formatted Tesla drives are a special case

A quick format replaces the file-system structures and can leave old video data behind. Recovery depends on what readable data remains, on later writes, and on the device and formatter; it is never guaranteed. Tesla writes one file per camera per minute into TeslaCam/RecentClips, SavedClips and SentryClips, so once the directory is gone a generic tool returns hundreds or thousands of unnamed MP4s.

On supported cars, Tesla has encrypted USB clips by default since software 2026.20. An encrypted clip has no readable MP4 header, so tools that carve by the MP4 header have nothing to match; see can TestDisk or PhotoRec recover encrypted Tesla clips? Clips recorded before the update, with Controls > Safety > Encrypt Dashcam Recordings off, or on cars without the feature are ordinary MP4 files that any of these tools can try.

If your clips are still on the drive and only need decrypting, you don't need recovery software: copy them off, and decrypt them with ClipSalvage (free and unlimited for existing clips) or another decryption route.

It can, for ordinary MP4 clips that haven't been overwritten. PhotoRec is free and open source and recovers files by their headers even after a reformat, but it does not restore original names or folders. ClipSalvage's free tier scans the whole drive, shows available previews, decrypts existing encrypted clips without limit and includes 3 recovery exports.
Of the nine tools here, only ClipSalvage states that it recovers and decrypts Tesla's encrypted clips. The decryption keys are held by Tesla and released only to the account the car was linked to when it recorded. The other vendors' pages checked for this article do not mention Tesla clip encryption.
Take the drive out of the car so it stops recording, don't copy anything onto it, and scan it from a computer, ideally from a disk image. Save recovered clips to a different drive. Overwritten footage can't be recovered by any tool.
