Tesla Camera Footage Police Report Evidence
A Tesla camera footage police report can depend on a few minutes of video that is easy to lose by accident. A Sentry event may have been deleted, the Tesla USB drive may prompt you to format it, or the recording may be missing from the car's viewer when you need it most. Your first priority is not finding the perfect viewer. It is preserving the drive in the state it is in.
Tesla Dashcam and Sentry Mode footage can be useful in hit-and-runs, parking damage, road-rage incidents, insurance disputes, and witness identification. But video is most useful when you can explain where it came from, when you found it, and how you kept the original storage unchanged. That is as much about careful handling as it is about recovery.
Preserve Tesla camera footage before making a police report
If the footage may relate to an incident, remove the Tesla USB drive from the vehicle and do not put it back in for normal recording. Tesla continually writes new clips to the drive. Those new writes can overwrite sectors that still contain a deleted recording. Once sectors have been overwritten, no recovery method can reliably reconstruct the original data.
Do not format the drive, even if the vehicle says it needs formatting. Do not copy unrelated files onto it, and avoid opening it in software that offers to repair the disk. A filesystem repair can change directory records and allocation information that may help identify the timing and structure of missing clips.
Start a simple contemporaneous note instead. Record the incident date and approximate time, the location, your vehicle's VIN or registration if relevant, when you removed the drive, and what you saw in the car. If an officer gives you an incident or report number, add that too. This is not a substitute for legal advice or local reporting procedures, which vary, but it creates a clear record of how you handled the evidence.
If your car still displays the event, export a copy before changing anything else. Keep the original USB drive aside after that. The exported copy is practical for sharing, while the original drive remains available if the police, insurer, attorney, or a later investigation needs to examine it.
What footage your Tesla USB drive may contain
Tesla Dashcam recording is not a single camera file. Depending on vehicle hardware, the USB drive can contain views from the front, rear, and left and right repeater cameras. AI4/HW4 vehicles also record left and right pillar cameras, for six recorded channels in total. AI3/HW3 vehicles record four channels and do not record the pillar views.
The cabin camera is not recorded to the Tesla USB drive. That distinction matters when describing what evidence may exist in a police report. Be specific about the views you actually have, and avoid assuming that a missing angle was recorded.
A useful clip package may include video from before, during, and after the event. The minutes before impact can show lane position, traffic signals, or an approaching vehicle. The minutes afterward can show where each vehicle stopped, visible damage, or a plate that was not clear at the moment of contact. Sentry Mode events can also group several camera views around the trigger, which helps establish sequence rather than presenting a single isolated frame.
Prepare files that are easy to review
When you have accessible MP4 files, make working copies onto a separate computer folder or a new storage device. Keep the folder structure and original filenames where possible. Avoid editing the only copy, trimming it, adding annotations, or re-encoding it before you have retained an untouched version.
For a police report, provide the reporting officer with the incident time zone, the vehicle location, and a short description of what each camera shows. Tesla timestamps can be helpful, but they should be treated as one part of the evidence rather than the only source of timing. A phone photo taken at the scene, a call log, building camera records, and witness accounts may help place the footage in context.
If you need to send video electronically, send a copy rather than the original evidence file. Ask the receiving agency how it prefers digital material to be submitted. Some departments accept upload portals or physical media, while others may want an officer to collect it. Keep a note of every copy you create and who receives it.
Check that the clip actually plays
Before you hand over a drive or upload a copy, open every camera view you intend to provide and watch the relevant segment. Confirm that the file plays through the key moment and that audio, if present, is handled according to the recipient's instructions. A file can have the right name and timestamp but still be incomplete after a damaged drive or interrupted write.
Do not replace an original with a repaired or converted version. If a clip needs repair to play, keep both the recovered original and the repaired working copy, clearly labeled. That preserves a more defensible record of what was found versus what was prepared for viewing.
When the footage was deleted, formatted, or corrupted
A missing Tesla clip is not automatically gone. Deleting a file or formatting a drive commonly removes filesystem references rather than immediately erasing every video sector. The physical data can remain until Tesla recording or another action overwrites it. This is why stopping use of the drive matters more than repeated attempts to browse it.
Tesla footage recovery also has details that generic storage workflows can miss. Tesla USB drives are commonly formatted as exFAT, which stores data in clusters. A Tesla-aware scan can carve at exFAT cluster boundaries instead of examining every byte as a possible file start. For a drive that is failing, repeatedly disconnecting, or showing read errors, create a byte-for-byte disk image first and work from that copy. Tesla camera footage police report issues with encryption
Tesla's 2026.20 USB encryption is rolling out by market and is not enabled everywhere, notably not in mainland China. In regions where it is not enabled, Dashcam and Sentry clips remain ordinary MP4 files and can be recovered as such.
Where encryption is enabled, recovering a deleted clip and decrypting it are separate steps. An encrypted clip does not expose the ordinary MP4 header a conventional file carver would search for, because the header itself is encrypted. A decryptor or viewer can process a file you give it, but a deleted or formatted clip may no longer exist as a usable file in the filesystem.
