Tesla Footage for a Hit and Run: What to Do

A hit-and-run claim can turn on a few seconds of video: a license plate, the direction of travel, the point of impact, or the moment another vehicle leaves the scene. Tesla footage for hit and run evidence is most useful when you preserve the USB drive before trying to find, replay, or repair anything. The first risk is often not the collision itself, but new recordings overwriting the sectors that still contain the missing clips.

Preserve Tesla footage for a hit and run first

Remove the Tesla USB drive as soon as it is safe to do so. Do not put it back in the vehicle to check whether a new clip appears, and do not accept a formatting prompt from a computer. Both actions can write to the drive. A format usually changes the file system's index rather than immediately erasing every video, but continued use can replace the underlying data with new camera recordings.

If the vehicle is still at the scene, use the screen to save the relevant event if it is available. Then keep the original USB drive aside. Make a working copy only if you have a reliable way to do so without writing back to the source. For an incident that may involve insurance, police, or a dispute, retaining the original drive and documenting when you removed it can also help establish how the evidence was handled.

Before looking for recovery software, check the ordinary Tesla folders on the drive. A present, playable MP4 is the simplest outcome. Copy it to more than one location, keeping the original filename and folder structure where possible. Also look around the expected time, rather than only at the exact minute of impact. Sentry Mode events, recent recordings, and manually saved clips can overlap in useful ways.

Why the clip may be missing

Tesla Dashcam footage is recorded to a USB drive in short segments. That is practical for continuous recording, but it means an event can be spread across several files and camera views. A clip may be absent because the drive filled up, the event was not saved, the file system became corrupted, a folder was deleted, or the drive was reformatted.

A missing filename does not always mean the video data is gone. On an exFAT drive, deletion commonly removes the directory reference that tells the computer where the file begins. The clusters that held the video can remain physically present until later recordings reuse them. Formatting can have a similar result: the directory structure may be replaced while portions of the video remain on the device.

The crucial limitation is overwriting. Once new data has replaced the clusters that contained a segment, no recovery method can reconstruct the original bytes from the drive. Partial overwriting is different. A recovered clip may play only partly, have a damaged ending, or be missing a section. That can still be useful if the readable portion contains the collision, vehicle details, or context immediately before the impact.

Tesla footage for hit and run cases may involve several cameras

Review the complete event rather than treating the front camera as the only source. Tesla USB recording includes front, rear, left repeater, and right repeater views. AI4/HW4 vehicles also record left and right pillar cameras; AI3/HW3 vehicles do not record the pillar positions. The cabin camera is not recorded to the USB drive.

Each view answers a different question. A repeater camera can capture a vehicle alongside yours before it moves out of frame. The rear view may show its departure direction. Front footage can establish lane position, signals, traffic flow, and the time leading into an impact. The useful plate frame may be brief and appear in a camera you would not initially expect.

Keep exports organized by event and camera position. For a report or claim, it is generally better to provide the original-quality clips along with a short written note stating the vehicle, approximate location, time window, and which camera shows the relevant detail. Avoid editing the only copy of a recovered recording. If you create a shortened version for easy viewing, retain the unedited export as well.

Encrypted clips need recovery and decryption

Tesla's 2026.20 USB encryption is rolling out by market and is not enabled everywhere, notably not in mainland China. Where it is not enabled, the drive contains ordinary MP4 clips and recovery works in the usual way. Where encryption is enabled, the situation changes if a clip has been deleted or lost in a format.

A decryptor or viewer can decrypt a file that you provide to it. But a deleted encrypted clip may no longer exist as a file in the directory structure. It must first be located and reconstructed from raw drive sectors. This is harder than ordinary MP4 carving because the MP4 header is encrypted too, leaving no recognizable MP4 header for a conventional carver to match.

That is why recovery and decryption are separate operations. For a deleted encrypted clip, the recovery process needs to carve the encrypted container from the drive, then decrypt it using your own Tesla keys. This distinction matters when deciding what to try. If the encrypted file is still visible on your drive, an existing decryptor may be all you need. If it was deleted or the drive was formatted, you need to establish whether the encrypted container can still be recovered before there is a file to decrypt.

Scan the drive without changing it

For a drive containing potential evidence, read-only access is not just a technical preference. It avoids modifying the source while you assess what remains. A read-only disk image is also useful when you need to preserve the physical USB drive but want to inspect a copy. The image is a byte-for-byte representation of the drive that can be scanned later without further handling of the original.

Tesla-aware recovery can use the way the drive stores data to search efficiently. Rather than testing every byte as a possible video start, ClipSalvage carves at exFAT cluster boundaries. The result should be evaluated, not assumed. Preview every candidate clip and look at its 0-100 confidence score. A higher score indicates stronger structural evidence that the video is intact; it is not a promise that every frame is usable. Check the camera position, timestamps where recovered, and the portion around the incident. If a partially overwritten clip needs repair, validate the repaired output by playing it through from before the relevant moment to after it.

Preserve what you can verify

Do not wait for a perfect reconstruction before preserving useful evidence. A readable side-camera segment, an incomplete rear clip, or a recovered timestamp can materially support the account of what happened. Save verified exports in at least two places, keep the original USB drive untouched, and provide copies through the channel requested by your insurer or investigating officer.
